| Amherst's Abby Fuhrman, Turners Falls' Danielle Sullivan win The Republican's high school softball a Tue, 08 Jul 2008 00:37:44 UTC By MIKE BOGEN The seniors represent quite different constituencies. And when the prospective Valley Wheel champion lost its first two encounters with VL powers Minnechaug and Westfield, it looked like the senior might not be up to the task. But then, in the pivotal game of the season, Fuhrman pitched a three-hit, 2-1 victory over Agawam, at Agawam. She even singled in the top to the seventh and came around with the eventual winning run. From there, Fuhrman, who has started every Amherst game since the opener in her freshman year, ran off 18 straight victories, including tournament wins that took the Hurricanes past Ludlow and both VL co-champions Agawam and Minnechaug to the Western Mass. title. Even a loss in the state semifinals couldn't dampen Fuhrman's sense of accomplishment. "In field hockey, we lost in the semifinals to Longmeadow, but we all felt like we had an amazing season, the whole experience together. It's the journey that makes it worth it, not achieving the goal," she says. Still, she adds, there's nothing quite like achieving the goal. "I've sacrificed social life, a lot of very early Saturday mornings, not only for me, but for my family. But every sacrifice I've made has been worth it," says Fuhrman, who intends to play both softball and field hockey at Skidmore College next year. "Winning Western Mass. was huge in making it worth it. All the hard work, the last week after the season, all I could think of was that, and all the people without whom I wouldn't have succeeded." In her senior season she Fuhrman whiffed 163 in 164 innings for a career total of 649. She walked only 15 - none in the first 32 innings of the season - and finished an 89-game career with only 66 walks. "As an athlete you like to think you have unlimited potential, and after every game I ask myself what I think I could have done better. But I think I had a really good year," she says. "The milestones made me feel like I had a good year, but that's cumulative. Of course there are times when I was frustrated. "I think I pitched well, though. I thought I was clutch, which is something I've always prided myself in." If Fuhrman was leading the Hurricanes' charge toward changing the perception that even the best Valley Wheel teams are still a step behind their VL counterparts, then Sullivan's 2008 journey was much more personal. Despite winning the Western Mass. Division III title in 2007, their first year without three-time Republican Pitcher of the Year Julie Girard, the Indians - Sullivan in particular - still felt that they had to prove they could win a state title on their own. And every time it looked like the Indians would stumble, Sullivan just got tougher, and stronger, and more clutch. Until finally, in Turners' 2-1 victory over West Bridgewater in the state championship game, the senior picked up her team and put it on her shoulders until the job was done. Sullivan, who had singled and scored Turners' first run, pitched three-hit ball over the last seven innings of a 10-inning game, and doubled home Kim Arsenault with the winning run. The victory was her 19th this season and 35th since Girard took her game to college. The game-winning RBI was her sixth in five tournament games, a tourney in which she hit .421 with a double and two triples. It was her 24th of the season, one in which she hit .493 with nine doubles, two triples and two home runs. And with every victory, every base hit, Sullivan took another step out of Girard's shadow. It was a journey that didn't really start until 10th grade. "I certainly was not a star before high school, and I played (junior varsity) for three years, with just a little varsity in 9th grade, as backup pitcher and outfielder a couple of times," Sullivan recalls. "Starting in 10th grade I was a starter in the outfield. I was a decent hitter, batted fifth or sixth." But she was learning. "Mr. Mullins (Indians coach Gary) taught me to hit. We worked a lot on my hitting," Sullivan says. "And I always worked on my pitching. I think it was expected that I'd be the pitcher in 11th grade. "I think I became a good hitter last year. We started a different technical style, and I found that I could hit inside pitches best. And, I stopped having fear. Yeah, of the ball. Being a lefty, they're not used to that. I don't remember getting hit, but I do remember being kind of afraid of getting hit." Mullins got Sullivan's foot out of the bucket with psychology. "Mr. Mullins cured me. He just made me relax, and if the ball was going to hit me, just hit it and pull the heck out of it," Sullivan says. "Yes, I do anything he says, because he's pretty imposing, and he's always right. He's kind of intimidating, but he's really not." Sullivan went from "a decent hitter" to a game-breaking threat. Physically very strong despite her 5-foot-1 stature, the ball just jumped off her bat. "I hit really well this year," Sullivan says. "I liked being up when it counted. And I think I pitched well, too. I think I did well when it counted. "I always felt I could do the job, We had a lot to prove last year, and after we lost in the state final, we felt we still had to prove it," she says." "I think this year we proved it." |
