And despite over cast skies, a nagging mist, and some serious chop in the water, the events and plans organized by the Salisbury Beach Partnership executive director Kathy Aiello, came to fruition regardless of how the elements were behaving. |

| Vouros hit spurs Manny's to Tri-County baseball win Mon, 30 Jun 2008 00:53:33 UTC By HARRY PLUMER hplumer@repub.com Greg Vouros has never been one to brag about his offensive prowess. But he was the key in Manny's 2-1 victory over St. Joseph, singling home what would eventually be the game-winning RBI in a Tri-County baseball game today at Deerfield Academy. St. Joseph jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Dan Abrahamson, but the lead would be short-lived. Manny's pitcher Nate Burnett led off the bottom half of the fourth with a walk and eventually scored on a John Wilks double. After a St. Joseph error moved Wilks to third, Vouros, who is usually recognized for his great defense, singled Wilks home to give Manny's the lead, which the pitching staff would hold for the victory. St. Joseph (7-6) threatened against Kurt Hayer, who came into the seventh in relief of Burnett, loading the bases after a couple of walks, but Hayer was able to strike out the final batter to record the save. Burnett struck out four while walking just one in his six innings of work to pick up the victory for Manny's, which moved to 9-3 with the win. Peoples Bank 6, Chicopee Falls Tigers 3: Ryan Franczek's two-run homer headlined a four-run sixth inning for Peoples, which got back on track in Tri-County play after its first two losses of the season. It looked as though it would be the same old story for a slumping Peoples squad after the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead, but starter Mike Drowne settled down, shutting out the Tigers for the rest of the game and giving up just three hits while striking out six. Bobby O'Neil and Ryan Bradley each had RBI doubles for Peoples, which retained a four-point lead in the Tri-County standings with the home victory. AMERICAN LEGION Holyoke 4, South Hadley-Pettengill 2: Sean Williamson had an RBI double in the seventh to lead Holyoke to a road victory at South Hadley. Nick Vautrin went the distance for South Hadley and Paul Ciolek and Carl Kapinos both tripled in the loss. WOMEN'S SOCCER Mutiny 7, New York A.C. 0: Mary Frances-Monroe increased her league-leading scoring with two goals and two assists as the Mutiny clinched a playoff spot with a blowout victory in New York City. Jenny Maurer of East Longmeadow opened the scoring with a 27th-minute goal, and Frances-Monroe tallied her first of the evening in the 39th to give the Mutiny a 2-0 halftime lead. LADY PIONEERS RAINED OUT: The Western Mass Lady Pioneers caught a tough break yesterday when the officials called the game due to weather with the Lady Pioneers leading 1-0 in the 29th minute. The game will not count, and a make-up date has yet to be determined. |
| 11-year-old Wilbraham golfer among world's best Sun, 29 Jun 2008 22:08:12 UTC By BILL WELLS wellsb6@charter.net Matt Naumec is among the best junior golfers in the Northeast. The Wilbraham resident also has a remarkably supportive family, including a grandfather whose nurturing wisdom has allowed an 11-year-old to not only completely fall in love with the sport, but has also put an athletically gifted boy on the path to golfing stardom. "I believe in my Pepe," said Naumec, referring to his grandfather, John Sauve. "He knows my swing." Naumec started hitting golf balls as a toddler, frequently heading over the Fenway Golf in East Longmeadow or the Country Club of Wilbraham with his parents, Mike and Michelle. The sport came easily to Naumec. When he was 7, his grandfather entered him in a U.S. Kids Golf World Championship Qualifier. He won. "My father took him there on a whim, and we didn't know anything about it," Michelle Naumec said. "We weren't expecting anything. My father had just signed him up for a tournament. He won his age division." That win qualified Naumec for the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship, where he competed against some of the elite golfers in his age group from all over the world. With his grandfather's guidance, Naumec's love affair with golf had begun. "My Pepe started me," Naumec said. "He taught me all the fundamentals. He was my main base, teaching me. He started me off and kept me going, and got my swing grooved. And my uncle (Mike Sauve) started teaching me some trick shots in case I was in a tough situation, like getting over things. And my dad watches me and makes sure I do everything right. Everybody in my family chips in." John Sauve said his grandson's natural athletic ability and love for the sport has led the fifth-grader to all of his youthful success. "I think he's technically sound in so many different areas," Sauve said. "His strength lies in the consistency in his swing. And also, for his age and size, he's very long. He has a swing that he's worked on for five or six years now, and he's very disciplined. He follows what he's supposed to be doing, and listens well. "He loves it. That's probably the biggest strength. He has a love for the game." Naumec won the Connecticut U.S. Kids Golf World Championship Qualifier at Trumbell, Conn., on Tuesday, which qualified him for the world championship for the fourth time in five years. This year's tournament will be hosted by Pinehurst, N.C., July 31-Aug. 2. Naumec's greatest golfing achievement, though, came in early June when he won a Calloway Junior World Sectional Qualifier, which was held at Rhode Island's Rehoboth CC. Despite not playing his best, he won the 11-12 division by one stroke. "I played decent, but I could have done better," he said. "I missed a lot of really, really short putts - like 1-footers. I could have done much better." The win qualified him for the 2008 Calloway Golf Junior World Golf Championship. The event will be hosted by Torrey Pines, in La Jolla, Calif., where the 2008 U.S. Open was recently played. Naumec will be among the greatest junior golfers in the world. Last year's 11-12 division included players from England, Thailand, Philippines, Columbia, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Australia, Malaysia, India, Guam, Indonesia, Panama, Peru, Costa Rica and Switzerland. This year's 11-12 division will play at Lake San Marcos CC, which is located near Torrey Pines. "I'm excited because this is probably the only time I'll get to go to California and get to play a major course: it's right next to Torrey Pines," Naumec said. "It's going to be great." |
