Your views: Letters to the editor Sun, 20 Apr 2008 04:20:00 EDT Bush violated international law To the editor: If you have been busy, you may have missed the admission last Friday by President George Bush that he was aware that principal Cabinet members met together and approved torture methods that include waterboarding. Waterboarding is a method of torture that involves making a prisoner feel like they are drowning, but stopping just short of actually killing them.
Taylor Armerding: 'Convenience' lets government take a bigger bite Sun, 20 Apr 2008 04:15:00 EDT Taylor Armerding Convenience is seductive. It is also expensive. It is a major reason why, as the country song says, too many of us have too much month left at the end of the money. This is not just me talking. You can look it up. This comes from a high-level university academic. Check out the study recently completed by MIT economist Amy Finkelstein on the difference between the traditional types who still pay their tolls in cash and the cutting-edge types (like me) who use Fast Lane transponders.

Forum: 2008 elections will define our energy future Sun, 20 Apr 2008 03:57:00 EDT Jerry Curran The 2008 elections will again demonstrate the strength of an increasingly common type of voter: one who believes that while the United States has the technology, know-how and power to build a clean energy economy that will create jobs and fight global warming, we have lacked the political will and leadership to take us there.
Hot Topic Sun, 20 Apr 2008 03:26:00 EDT Personal experience No, I don't support dress codes in schools. In my sophomore year, my teacher called me over to her desk and told me I looked like a tramp in my decent, rainbow colored dress I bought with my baby-sitting money. She said this in front of a whole class. In my senior year, another teacher sent me home for wearing sneakers. I had no shoes so I went out and found a job and never returned to Haverhill High School. Of course, I don't recommend this for students today because the shoe shops aren't around now. Chances are they're wearing skirts or dresses that are too short because they outgrew them or got taller. Perhaps the school should buy them their clothes.

Hope on horizon in world's battle against influenza Tuesday April 22, 2008 There is good news and bad on the influenza front. The bad news is that this year's vaccine proved only 44 percent effective, leading to the most miserable, and deadly, flu season for Americans since 2003-04. Vaccine makers' annual educated guessing game as to which flu strains to guard against was less accurate than normal, with the Type A Brisbane and Type B Florida strains causing most of the misery.
