Decision caused degradation of water Sunday August 10, 2008 The recent decision by the Department of Environmental Protection to forbid the lowering/closing of the weir dam in the channel between Lake Quaboag (North Pond) and Lake Quacumquosit (South Pond) at a time of heavy rainfall, allowed a torrent of water, loaded with weeds, algae, phosphorus and other nutrients, to pour into South Pond, where it will remain for months or years.
Roadway must be shared with bicyclists Sunday August 10, 2008 I'm a concerned resident of the city of Worcester. I'm a frequent bicycle rider, and I'm constantly getting motorists honking and yelling at me to get out of the roadway, telling me to get on the sidewalk. In the city of Worcester there is a $50 fine for riding a bicycle on a sidewalk.
Politicians should do time if they do crime Sunday August 10, 2008 I liked the editorial, "Rules of their own" (Telegram & Gazette, July 16), about the deplorable actions of state Sen. J. James Marzilli, Jr., D-Arlington. It was right on the money. But this comes as no surprise to me. It's a Beacon Hiller MO. This guy is a real piece of work. He is using his illness as an excuse to keep from going to jail.
AARP program offers volunteer opportunity Sunday August 10, 2008 A recent article (Sunday Telegram, July 27) reported that volunteerism in Massachusetts is 27 percent, ranking the state 34th among all states and at the national average of 26.2 percent.

God's way is the way of peace Sunday August 10, 2008 I'm writing this letter in reference to the article by Bruce Kauffmann, "The defeat of the Spanish Armada" (Telegram & Gazette, July 27). It explained how King Philip of Spain sent a poorly prepared armada against the British and lost. King Philip believed that despite the known weaknesses of the armada, his faith in God's providence and justice over England's heresies would bring about victory.
Congress should consist of middle-class workers Sunday August 10, 2008 After 30-plus years since the last energy crisis, Congress has done nothing. Remember Khrushchev saying they would bury us from within? Is Congress working for foreign countries trying to destroy us?
Building bridges Sunday August 10, 2008 Gov. Deval L. Patrick's approval of a $3 billion highway and bridge bond bill is a positive and long overdue step toward improving the commonwealth's infrastructure, too much of which has been neglected for years. The key to making the bond issue effective will be efficient, no-nonsense enactment of the work it authorizes.
Combating AIDS Sunday August 10, 2008 Behind the noisy headlines about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the rising costs of energy, and the approaching presidential election, the Bush administration has quietly been going about making good on an unprecedented commitment to combat the global scourge of AIDS.
Shaping our identity, namely speaking Sunday August 10, 2008 If I ever got to be rule-maker for the world, one of the first changes I'd make would be to stop allowing parents to name their own babies. I mean, isn't it enough for parents to foist our last names on us without sticking us with funny first names as well?
Obama gets mixed review Sunday August 10, 2008 My recent trip to Europe coincided with Barack Obama's eight-day, seven-country tour, staged to show that he is presidential material. I used the occasion to gauge the reaction by commentators, friends and ordinary citizens to the Democrats' presumptive standard-bearer who, according to Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, was "treated as a cross between the Dalai Lama and Johnny Depp."
| YOUR VIEW: Pharmaceutical gift ban merits governor's signature Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:00 EST As original sponsor of an outright gift ban on the pharmaceutical industry over five years ago, I urge the governor to sign the health care cost containment bill in its current form. | OUR VIEW: Taxes and tactics Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:00 EST No doubt many readers will chuckle at the idea of Massachusetts voting to eliminate the state income tax. After all, the proposal would slash state revenue by 40 percent, instantly crippling funding for, well, everything. |
YOUR VIEW: Westport board cries out for civility Sat, 09 Aug 2008 06:00 EST I wish to address Claude Ledoux's recent letters. I have been called intolerant and uncivil because of one comment I made at a recent joint meeting of the Board of Selectmen and school board.

High copays may explain hospitals' low numbers Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:00 EST Although different insurance plans have different copays, my plan has a $25 copay for any procedure performed in a doctor's office. If, however, I have the same outpatient work performed in a hospital, my copay jumps tenfold, to $250.
Choosing the right image Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:00 EST Two weeks ago, I looked closely at photo manipulation and the effect photo editing software has had on photojournalism. But there is much more to newspaper photography than that topic.
