Who does the City Council represent? Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT To the editor: In order to have an informed electorate we have to get the straight story. While I applaud a reporter accurately quoting the pronouncement of politicians and other officials no matter how ridiculous the statement, I do object to reporters perpetuating the party line and the editorial writers not setting the story straight!
Letter: Beverly leaders have lost our trust Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT To the editor: The Beverly City Council just voted for the trash fee to remain the same as the past year. They admitted that the money they collected exceeded the need and that there was a surplus. When the trash fee was initiated, we citizens were told that the money could only be used for the removal of trash. Because it is a fee and not considered a real tax, we cannot deduct it from our income taxes. The city will now be collecting our money under false pretenses, using it for what they want, and we have to sit and smile.
Our view: 'War crimes' charade is preposterous Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT The words and actions of the dean of the Massachusetts School of Law cast the local school in ill repute and raise doubt over whether anyone can expect serious legal training there. Lawrence Velvel, dean and co-founder of the law school, says that President Bush and members of his administration should be placed on trial for war crimes and, if found guilty, hanged — just like the leaders of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan.
Our view: Use common sense, stay healthy Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT Contrary to what those in the fashion and antiperspirant industries would tell you, sweat is a really good thing. This is especially true in the summer, when it can be the difference between life and death. The human body uses sweat as an biochemical air conditioning system to keep the internal temperature somewhere close to an ideal 98.6 degrees.
Letter: JROTC leading the way Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT To the editor: Regarding Vietnam War veteran Gerard Hosman's Tuesday, July 8, 2008, letter "Students should hear from both sides on military services." The United States Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, at Tun Tavern, Philadelphia, Pa. Since that time, the Marine Corps has honorably served this nation with distinction, courage and will. The JROTC was created under the National Defense Act of 1916. The JROTC Program is located coast to coast in many of our high schools. As an officer in Salem High Marine Corps JROTC, it has been an honor to wear the uniform that so many have worn defending this nation. It is with pleasure that I write to you today explaining what the ROTC fully represents. As an officer, it is my obligation to teach the cadets that serve under my command the three Marine Corps values: honor, courage, and commitment. Honor to serve the people of the community, courage to finish the great task set before us, and commitment to do it to the best of our ability. The JROTC also practices JJDIDTIEBUCKLE. Each letter of this anagram represents a trait a cadet is expected to know, understand, and utilize.
Letter: Fireworks display needed better music Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:30:00 EDT To the editor: The fireworks in Danvers were as good as they usually are, but someone ought to have a talk with whoever arranged the musical accompaniment. First, the music was way too loud. When it vibrates in your chest and hurts the ears of someone like myself who is already hearing impaired, not to mention the young children there who, at least before that night, were not hearing impaired, then it is just too loud. Part of the fireworks, like the sizzles and whistles, were completely drowned out by the loudness of the music.
'War crimes' charade is preposterous Thu, 10 Jul 2008 03:40:00 EDT The words and actions of the dean of the Massachusetts School of Law cast the school in ill repute and raise doubt over whether anyone can expect serious legal training there. Lawrence Velvel, dean and co-founder of the law school, says that President Bush and members of his administration should be placed on trial for war crimes and, if found guilty, hanged — just like the leaders of Nazi Germany and imperial Japan.
Viewpoint: The facts of America Thu, 10 Jul 2008 03:39:00 EDT In "The aging of America" published on June 26, Mr. McGlew gloomily seems to predict the death of the United States, and pairs this supposed death with a "presidential candidate ... promising change." Tied in with this claim are all manner of unsupported appeals to statistics and misguided political thoughts.
Letter: Name senior center after the Plouffs Thu, 10 Jul 2008 03:38:00 EDT To the editor: Now that the possibility becomes even greater for Newburyport to get its long-sought-after senior center, I would like to offer a suggestion. When this center is built, there will probably be a lot of discussions and suggestions as to what its name should be.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to enhance the science curriculum at Pine Grove School in Rowley. |
Letter: Obama suggestion scary Thu, 10 Jul 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: I've recently heard and read Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee for president, give a speech concerning his desire for more national volunteerism, especially among our youths. He is even willing to set national goals and standards for our youths for the amount of volunteering our students must perform during the year. He has a desire to turn our youths into a civilian national security force that is as strong as our military forces are. I think that this may be an attempt by Obama to turn our youths and eventually this society into a nationalistic society much like that of Nazi Germany just before the outbreak of World War II.
Children deserve to be healthy at school Thursday July 10, 2008 School health services have a proven value to the health and education of our children. Both school nurses and school-based health centers keep children in school and adults at work, reducing absenteeism and trips to the emergency room. They're on the front lines of preventing illness, reducing health care costs, and eliminating health disparities across race, ethnicity and class.

School administration salaries appalling Thursday July 10, 2008 I'm disgusted with the city's elected officials after reading Clive McFarlane's column, "Two Americas playing out in Worcester" (Telegram & Gazette, May 21), regarding the divide between city employees who make huge salaries getting hefty pay raises and those employees whose salaries barely keep them above the poverty line.

Buyer's market Thursday July 10, 2008 The launch of an ambitious and truly unique home ownership initiative in Worcester yesterday took on the fervor of an old-time revival meeting at times - and not without reason. The program, which taps the enlightened self-interest of buyers, employers and the banking, legal and business sectors, could well be a national model for shaking the housing market out of the doldrums.
