Our view: Gun ownership laws are clarified Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:40:00 EDT It took more than 200 years but the U.S. Supreme Court finally settled, once and for all time, what the Second Amendment to the Constitution means. It means that any individual in the United States, who is not otherwise disqualified by reason of mental illness or criminal record, has the right to own a firearm.
Letter: Coaches did great job with U-12 soccer team Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:39:00 EDT To the editor: On behalf of the parents of the Amesbury U-12 boys travel soccer, we would like to thank Gordon Stockwood and Rob Flanagan for doing an awsome job coaching these boys all season long. The Amesbury U-12 boys made it to the Pingree Playoffs to go all the way to win the championship in this league. They went to the playoff and played the best as a team; they learned how to work as a team. They couldn't have done it without the patience and the encouragement that the coaches had given these boys. They played two playoff games and lost Saturday against Methuen, but these boys gave it their all. Thanks, Gordon and Rob, let's try again next spring.
Letter: Cushing Park should be preserved Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:38:00 EDT To the editor: The other evening, the Newburyport City Council Planning and Development Committee voted against changing the designation of Cushing Park from park/parking lot to one that could be used as a site for a senior center. This was the right decision for the committee to make, after holding numerous meetings and hearing from many neighborhood residents who are opposed to any change in use.
Letter: Develop Cushing Park as place to serve all the community Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:37:00 EDT To the editor: In response to both letters to the editor published in The Daily News on Friday, June 27, concerning building a senior center at Cushing Park: While I have never responded to a letter or editorial in my life, I feel strongly about developing Cushing Park as a campus that would serve seniors, youth and neighbors. I am just in from a walk that took me around Cushing Park. It is a Saturday morning and while it is cool and misty, there are tag sales in progress, people running and walking their dogs, and people out doing yard work. I did not see a single person at Cushing Park. What I did see was seven cars, (two with New Hampshire plates, and one from Maine); one unhitched trailer, and oh, a trashed television set thrown near a trash barrel on the side of the road. This is not the first time I have witnessed a scene like this, and in fact, it is more the rule than the exception.
Letter: Time to vote yes for senior center at Cushing Park Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: My connection to the Newburyport Council on Aging (COA) has been as a SHINE counselor who provides advice to senior citizens on health insurance options, enrollment applications, claims and appeals. Conferences with clients must be held in a setting which respects privacy and confidentiality and which provides telephone and high-speed Internet access.
Senior center: The time is now Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:35:00 EDT To the editor: For decades now this community has debated over where a senior center should be located. The current proposed site of Cushing Park was urged upon the Senior Center Site Selection Committee by the former administration of Mayor Clancy and then planning director Nick Cracknell and now has been endorsed and put forward by our current mayor, John Moak. Both administrations have understood the necessity of a senior center.
Opponents should reconsider Narcan plan Monday June 30, 2008 It's disturbing that the Main South Alliance for Public Safety's William Breault and District 4 City Councilor Barbara G. Haller oppose making the anti-overdose medicine Narcan widely available ("Anti-OD grant triggers alarm," Telegram & Gazette, June 14). Studies have found that making Narcan available to drug users and their families saves lives without increasing drug use. That's why cities across the country are making sure everyone has access to it. The choice is simple: Save
Diocese turns back on elderly members Monday June 30, 2008 In many cultures, the elderly are embraced, honored and supported. The Diocese of Worcester has deemed it fit to cast aside the elderly members of St. Casimir Church.
Keep fire station at Providence Street Monday June 30, 2008 I have been a lifelong resident of Vernon Hill, and I find the idea of closing the Providence Street Fire Station absurd. One year ago, we had a fire at our three-family home, and it was the men from the Providence Street station that were the first to arrive. If it was not for their quick action and courageous effort, everything that our families have worked for would have been lost.
Let's find another way to save the auditorium Monday June 30, 2008 Before we spend $20 million to $30 million, I hope that another use can be found for the Worcester Memorial Auditorium other than as a new home for the Higgins Armory Museum.
Teacher teaches what is really important Monday June 30, 2008 I was watching a baseball game - the Red Sox, of course - with my two little grandchildren, and the announcer mentioned a charity that the team supports. Jimmy, 5, said, "Oh, it's for a charity." My daughter said, "What is a charity Jimmy?" Jimmy said, "It's where people help other people who don't have enough money for food and clothes for their children."
Humane Society actions are questionable Monday June 30, 2008 It's ironic that American Bible Society president Paul Irwin is so supportive of the "animals and religion" program promoted by the Humane Society of the United States. ("Religious support for Humane Society goals," Telegram & Gazette, June 12). Mr. Irwin was recently fired by the Bible Society's board of directors because the company he hired to develop its Web sites was heavily involved in the online world of hard-core pornography.

Another Pike mess Monday June 30, 2008 The revelation that 10 Massachusetts Turnpike toll collectors may have pocketed thousands of dollars by systematically misclassifying and miscounting vehicles is just the latest outrage visited upon motorists and taxpayers already beleaguered by Big Dig corruption and cost overruns, toll hikes, traffic jams and soaring gasoline prices.
Racinos redux Monday June 30, 2008 Massachusetts' moribund racing industry, limping along on state subsidies and a barely adequate fan base, is making yet another pitch for slot-machine gambling. Having failed repeatedly in recent years to persuade the Legislature to allow them to operate slot parlors, track operators are trying to work up support from the hinterland.
Fire chiefs trying to close loophole in fire-safety rules Monday June 30, 2008 As Worcester fire chief and the recently appointed president of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts, I am asking for public support for a very important bill that the association is seeking to have passed. The lifesaving bill would close a critical loophole in the state's fire-safety regulations.

| YOUR VIEW: Reinstate McAuliffe or resign Mon, 30 Jun 2008 06:00 EST When John McAuliffe was hired as our town administrator, it was hailed by the Board of Selectmen as a very smart move. | A fleeting victory for constitutional originalism Mon, 30 Jun 2008 06:00 EST "The Constitution is a written instrument. As such its meaning does not alter. | Media focuses too heavily on one cause of club fire Mon, 30 Jun 2008 06:00 EST After reading the June 27 report on the foam company offering $6.3 million to settle lawsuits in The Station nightclub fire, I'm appalled at the narrow-sightedness of the press in this situation. |
