My view: Nurse staffing rules make sense Mon, 23 Jun 2008 08:13:00 EDT In concept, it would seem local control over nurse staffing is best. However, the history of the problem highlights why and when regulation is important to protect the public. A successful hospitalization, after all, is the difference between life or death, health or dysfunction.
Letter: School calendar must make students' needs the priority Mon, 23 Jun 2008 08:12:00 EDT To the editor: My professional training and work experience are as an educator. While I respect the school district's role in providing a duty-free lunch, prep time and on-the-clock training, I struggle to think of a single profession in which the individual is not responsible for increasing his or her own skill set.
Our view: Riding the rails Mon, 23 Jun 2008 08:12:00 EDT It's been 30 years since Salem's David Pelletier began preaching the benefits of a new light rail system for the North Shore he called the Coastal Corridor and would talk about to anyone who would listen.
Letter: Peabody needs to pay its teachers better Mon, 23 Jun 2008 08:12:00 EDT To the editor: I have been a physics teacher at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School for the last seven years. During that time I have seen many young, energetic and innovative teachers start their careers at PVMHS only to leave after two, three or four years because all the communities surrounding Peabody can offer them a salary raise of anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000. With today's economics of trying to mortgage a house and raise a family on a two-income basis, it's no wonder why so many of these young people leave.
Letter: Column on global warming just plain wrong Mon, 23 Jun 2008 08:11:00 EDT To the editor: Regarding Robert Kelly's June 18 column ("Contrary to Gore, sky's not falling"): In February 2007, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a report saying that if "greenhouse gases continue to build in the atmosphere at even a moderate pace, temperatures by the end of the century could match those last seen 125,000 years ago, in the previous warm spell between ice ages."
Thanks: Shelter was ready Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: On the evening of the recent Peabody fire, the Salem Board of Health was asked to set up an emergency shelter for up to 900 people. At first, it seemed like an enormous task. However, within a very short time, the shelter was ready to assist with food, counseling, replacement of prescriptions and overnight accommodations for residents and pets. This was possible because of the assistance of many agencies, businesses and individuals.
Thanks: Fathers, daughters enjoyed Swampscott dance Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: On June 14, more than 225 young girls, their fathers and grandfathers attended the first annual Father Daughter Dance sponsored by the Swampscott Police Association. The event was a huge success, and many people are still expressing their gratitude to members of our group for planning such a night for the girls and dads of Swampscott. The SPA would like to thank all the couples who attended and enjoyed a fantastic evening of dancing and gathering with friends.
Thanks: Beverly blaze could have been worse Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: On Thursday, May 29, I was informed by the Beverly Fire Department that a fire had occurred in the back of my building on Park Street. According to the police log, a small blaze started by a discarded cigarette had been extinguished by the firefighters.
Thanks: St. Mary's golf tourney a great success Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: St. Mary's School in Beverly held its annual golf tournament on Monday, June 9, at the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club. This year's tournament was renamed in honor of Mary Moulton, a mother of two who tragically passed away last fall. The winning team of Mike Moulton, Gene Anderson, Colin McGee and Tom Laxton outlasted the field in the heat, posting 12 under par to win the scramble.
Thanks: Team Brobot had lots of community support Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: Team Brobot, the first-year robotics team of Peabody High, would like to express its sincere appreciation to Analogic, General Electric, Eastman Gelatine Corporation, Peabody Education Council, East Boston Savings Bank, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, Community Credit Union of Lynn and Madico of Woburn for their generous financial contributions.
Thanks: Peabody firefighters did great job at Dearborn blaze Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: On behalf of Mayor Michael Bonfanti and myself, I would like to take the opportunity to thank and recognize all of Peabody's firefighters for the tremendous effort they put forth in fighting the four-alarm fire on Thursday, May 29, at 8 Ashford Trail at the Highlands on Dearborn Road.
Thanks: McKeown School parents beaten but unbowed Sat, 21 Jun 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: As a citizen of Beverly and parent of McKeown School children, I would just like to send my heartfelt thanks to all of the people who supported the override campaign. It was nice to see the community come together and work for a common goal. Although the result was not what we wanted, we need to step above our feelings and think about our children. They are devastated and confused at this point.
Standards set for Web site comments Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:40:00 EDT Newspapers have always embraced their role as a protector of people's rights to free speech, but at what point do those rights cross over into offensive behavior that should be censured? That debate has taken on new meaning at The Daily News, due to a new Web feature that allows readers to comment on stories that appear on our Web site. This type of feature is becoming increasingly popular throughout the media.
Erosion problem needs regional solution Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:39:00 EDT In nature's eye, all that separates the beaches of Salisbury and Plum Island is a river. But given the political split that's developing, it may as well be an ocean. Both beaches are suffering the effects of erosion. Both need solutions. But an advocacy group on Plum Island continues to treat it as a problem that only affects Plum Island. And in the end, both communities may suffer for this.
Thanks to teachers in Amesbury school system Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:38:00 EDT To the editor: I want to say thank-you to all of the teachers in the Amesbury school system who taught my children over the years. From Mrs. Schultz in kindergarten to Ms. Tassinari in high school, my children received, what I feel, is a great education. My son, James, is very successful in the Army, and Jessica is leaving for college in the fall. So, thank you for your dedication to my children and the children of Amesbury.
Letter: Selectmen's decision on Tymon was wrong Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:37:00 EDT To the editor: I am writing to thank you for your editorial on June 12 and for highlighting the decision of two of the three selectmen to terminate Judy Tymon's position as town planner for the Town of Newbury.
Letter: Decision on town planner not a surprise Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: Based on the extremely biased and uninformed editorial opinion ("Newbury selectmen fail to make case for firing town planner") about the Town of Newbury's decision not to renew the contract of its planner, as appeared in the paper on June 12, the paper should be renamed The Daily Amnesia. This action was not a surprise to the rest of us. In fact, questions about the planner's performance and contribution to the town have been going on for more than a year, as has been reported in The Daily News itself many times.
Letter: Newbury residents, take charge of your town Mon, 23 Jun 2008 03:35:00 EDT To the editor: As of the end of June 2008, I will no longer be the town planner for the town of Newbury and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and my respect for the Newbury Planning Board. Every resident should be grateful for their dedication and hard work. Thanks also to Selectman Jen Wright, whose tenacity, courage and willingness to speak out has inspired me to do the same.
Hunting not only way to control coyotes Monday June 23, 2008 I appreciate the opportunity to expand upon the issue of coyote hunting, "Extended hunting season nearly doubles Massachusetts coyote kill" (Telegram & Gazette, June 14).
Traffic light would address Rt. 20 safety issue Monday June 23, 2008 On a recent late April visit to see my mother, we decided to go down to the Christmas Tree Shops on Route 20. Upon arriving at the entrance, we encountered a problem: We had to wait several minutes to try and pull into the parking lot because the oncoming traffic wouldn't stop and let us through.
Don't hold Dems responsible for crisis Monday June 23, 2008 This is in response to a letter to the editor from Putnam, Conn. (Sunday Telegram, June 15).
Stimulus, anyone? Some retirees, vets have yet to file Monday June 23, 2008 When Uncle Sam offers to send back some of your money, it's rarely a bad idea to say no, yet the Internal Revenue Service estimates that 151,000 Massachusetts retirees and disabled veterans have not yet filed for funds available under the Economic Stimulus Act.
Less stable Monday June 23, 2008 While it appears the state will close out fiscal 2008 this month in fairly good financial shape, the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation is warning that the 2009 state budget could deplete nearly half the commonwealth's reserves, taking a $2.1 billion fund balance to just $1.2 billion. That should serve as a wakeup call to the spendthrifts on Beacon Hill.
YOUR VIEW: America crumbles as we pump money into Iraq Tue, 24 Jun 2008 06:00 EST My country builds huge permanent American military bases in Iraq while large portions of Gulf Coast communities remain abandoned ruins, whose inhabitants, my countrymen, remain far away from home, many living in flimsy trailers and flimsier tents under...

YOUR VIEW: Traffic supervisors blindsided by loss of unemployment Tue, 24 Jun 2008 06:00 EST I read with interest the op-ed from Joe Michaud and the response from Sean McGuire representing the Police Brotherhood. While Mr. Michaud states that his op-ed is to serve by way of assessment and not to assign blame, he wastes no time in placing a large...
OUR VIEW: Keep the holiday, then move forward Tue, 24 Jun 2008 06:00 EST If the Legislature decides to forgo the tax holiday this year, it will be a blow to our state's economic morale. With some $16 million in savings on the line, many consumers and businesses will be disappointed to miss the little boost of spending they've...
YOUR VIEW: Wareham selectmen wanted a puppet Tue, 24 Jun 2008 06:00 EST In 2007, Wareham Town Meeting approved the perpetual conservation restriction known as the Great Neck Conservation Phase 2, owned by the Barker Family Trust. This approval was negated by the present Select Board.

NATIONAL VIEW: Maybe, in January, it'll be time to rethink Electoral College Tue, 24 Jun 2008 06:00 EST The presidential candidates of both parties are supporting the popular campaign theme of "change." But after the dust begins to settle in November, and not too long after we have a new president in January, maybe it's time for both parties to consider...

OUR VIEW: Bush energy strategy leaves us cold Sun, 22 Jun 2008 06:00 EST Big Oil's lapdog, who unfortunately sits in the Oval Office, last week trotted out the same old, same old: Drill more oil.
OUR VIEW: Westport leaders, voters do the right thing Sun, 22 Jun 2008 06:00 EST Westport's leaders deserve great credit for persuading voters to spend $7 million for a new fire station.
NATIONAL VIEW: Abandoning bottled water for plain old tap Sun, 22 Jun 2008 06:00 EST One of the glories of this country has been the municipal water system. Go anywhere, turn on the tap and out comes clear, fresh drinking water. That's not true in large parts of the world as unwary tourists frequently learn to their dismay.
FROM THE EDITOR: Making the difficult calls Sun, 22 Jun 2008 06:00 EST What right, a caller asked, did we have to publish the name of a juvenile arrested on drug charges during a recent sweep by law enforcement officers that resulted in the arrest of Monte Park gang members?
YOUR VIEW: Responsibility, not age, is key for alcohol consumption Sun, 22 Jun 2008 06:00 EST Denise Gaudette wrote a very thoughtful and well-intentioned June 19 op-ed regarding underage drinking and the recent incident at Dartmouth High. However, I must respectfully but strongly disagree with some of the assertions contained therein.

NATIONAL VIEW: The politics of spare change Sat, 21 Jun 2008 06:00 EST Barack Obama isn't abandoning his pledge to take public financing for the general election campaign because it's in his political interest. Certainly not. He isn't about to become the first candidate since Watergate to run an election fueled entirely...
