Our view: Don't let 'taxachusetts' rear its ugly head again Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT Massachusetts legislators are on a taxation binge that threatens much of the progress made in recent years in rolling back the state's "Taxachusetts" label. Last week, the state Senate passed a massive increase in taxes on businesses and boosted the tax on cigarettes by $1 per pack. House versions of the same bills passed last month. The two versions of the bills must be reconciled before moving to the governor for his signature.
As I See It: If you can't beat dandelions, eat them Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT Spring is sure here. I am disgusted — some people walking by asked me what I was doing. They said I should buy some weed kill. They sure knew how to hurt a guy. I did manage to fill our sink with dandelions last night, and they soaked in cold water all night. Now I have four bowls full, all cooked and in the fridge. I've had dandelions at meals or for a meal all week now.
Lorraine Sampou deserves community's thanks Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Lorraine Sampou for all of her efforts in managing and directing the West Newbury Youth Soccer League. Having recently assumed Lorraine's former position, I can attest to the amount of time, commitment and effort it takes to manage a youth sports league. Lorraine volunteered her time in this position for eight years, which is a credit to her character and benefited countless children in West Newbury. We all live very busy lives, and very few people commit as much time for the benefit of others as Lorraine has over the years. And she should be commended for it.
Volunteers spruced up Cashman School Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the Editor: On behalf of the students, staff and faculty, and families of the Charles C. Cashman Elementary School, I would like to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to a dedicated group of individuals who gave the gift of time and muscle power to beautify the schoolyard recently in conjunction with local Arbor Day celebrations.
Where's democracy in West Newbury? Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the Editor: With a whopping 25 percent of the town's voting-eligible public casting their votes in the most recent election, I think it's clearly time for us to abolish democracy in West Newbury. A full 75 percent of the voting public made it absolutely clear that they don't care about taxes, schools, roads, water quality, crime, fire trucks, recreation programs and all the other "administrivia" of local government. So why are we fighting the will of the majority and persisting with these expensive and really inconvenient elections?
Thanks for making Bar Mitzvah fundraiser a success Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the Editor: We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the Newburyport community in supporting Jacob in his fundraising efforts in honor of his Bar Mitzvah. Jacobs decision to donate all his gift money to Global Camps Africa will make a difference in a lot of children's lives. The camp is located in South Africa, and they help children who are affected by AIDS. The donations from Jakes friends, their families and our neighbors totaled $2,063! Wow! Thank you!
Letter: Civil Defense group needs volunteers Tue, 13 May 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: As the former director of the local Civil Defense/Emergency Management Agency, I am saddened and disappointed on the lack of volunteerism for the past four years, much of it due to former Mayor Clancy's dismantling of this vital department and handing over the reins to the fire chief.
Council should keep the power of the purse Mon, 12 May 2008 05:55:00 EDT We expect our elected officials to be accountable to the voters, spend our tax dollars wisely, and provide leadership and progress for the community. That's a lot to ask. So asking the Newburyport City Council to surrender one of its more tedious duties — approving budget line items, and transfers of less than $2,000 between line items with a given department — might seem like an logical thing to give up.
Obama, Wright connections are clear Mon, 12 May 2008 05:55:00 EDT To the Editor: This is a reply to McCain Part 2, a column I totally disagree with. I believe and the evidence is in all the media that Sen. Barack Obama has gotten the best ride from all the press. Who is this man? It's really not clear, but after hearing a few speeches by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, I see the influence on Sen. Obama — birds of the same feather flock together.
| Amesbury has a lot of good things happening Mon, 12 May 2008 05:55:00 EDT To the Editor: The Amesbury Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Foundation wants to point out some of the positive developments in town. | Thanks to Georgetowners Mon, 12 May 2008 05:55:00 EDT To the editor; I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Georgetown for supporting the Fire Department at the Town Meeting on Monday night. I encourage all the citizens of Georgetown to vote yes on Question 4 on Monday, May 12. The $91,000 will help us provide firefighter and EMT coverage during the hours of the day when our current all call force is light. |
The magic of mundane Mon, 12 May 2008 05:55:00 EDT In this world of frenzy and fury, of endless climbing to reach the top, there comes a time to ask, "When is enough enough?" Living in McMansions, driving tank-like SUVs, wearing designer clothes, having every electronic device that is nearly obsolete as it leaves the store and an endless list of material things, what among them brings a single moment of pure joy?

Initiative would offer reusable shopping bags Tuesday May 13, 2008 Wal-Mart Stores Inc. congratulates Conor Neal and Ryan White for their forward thinking and concern for our environment that brought their school project all the way to the Sturbridge Town Meeting in April. Although a majority of town residents have decided that a plastic bag ban is not the best option for Sturbridge, community members and retailers, it's these students' motivation and commitment to the environment that engaged an entire community in thinking about ways to become a better place
Spend or save? Tuesday May 13, 2008 Checks from the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 are just now beginning to arrive in taxpayers' bank accounts, but surveys and studies suggest that a majority of the recipients won't be rushing off to the mall to make the economy boom once more. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
