Letter: What is quality of life? Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: Over the past month or so, I have read numerous letters to the editor concerning the upcoming override for the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District. Most of them were well written and from the heart.
Letter: No winners in Hamilton-Wenham override debate Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: For the past few months, I have been reading the material that the group SOS (Save Our Schools) has been sending out. In all honesty, I have to say that the group should be commended for their time, effort, energy and dedication toward the goal of keeping the education system intact.
Letter: School cuts no exaggeration at all Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: Regarding the recent letter in The Salem News charging that effects of the cuts on the Hamilton-Wenham school district were being exaggerated. No so! I would like to address the points one at a time:
Letter: Hamilton budgets require reality and creativity Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: Most rational people make purchasing decisions based upon how much money they have coming in their paychecks. Surely, unexpected events like the car breaking down or the furnace needing repair throw us off. For the most part, however, we wouldn't (and shouldn't) enter into contracts knowing full well that we don't have the means to pay for them. This is precisely what happens in Hamilton town government.
Override stirs passions Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT Voters in Hamilton and Wenham face tough choices at their upcoming town meetings. The regional school district's budget, and Proposition 21/2 overrides to support it, have become divisive issues. Of the district's proposed $27 million budget for the coming school year, about $1.29 million is contingent upon an override approval from Hamilton, and another $601,000 depends on the same action in Wenham.
Letter: Enough is Enough has been well-received Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: As we're getting closer to our town meeting on May 5, our grassroots group "Enough is Enough" is getting wonderful feedback from quite a few people in the community. Most of it is positive and from all ages.
Letter: Go along, get along Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT To the editor: This is what the town of Hamilton elites think you should do regarding overrides. They say "Go along, get along. It's only the cost of a cup of coffee." The general public is voting with its feet. "Let me out of here." The population is down! Lots of houses are for sale! The quality of education is in the pits! Proof positive that money thrown at schools doesn't necessarily raise results.
Our view: Reaching out to the community in Peabody Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT The Peabody School Committee should be congratulated for reaching out to local Realtors in an attempt to better sell the schools to prospective homebuyers. There is much the two groups can learn from each other.
Letter: Schools' problem is not a spending problem Sat, 26 Apr 2008 05:45:00 EDT As longtime Wenham residents, my husband and I are proud to be able to send our four children to the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District. Like everyone else, we're shocked and dismayed by what is happening to our towns. How did we get here? Well, I did a little digging and here's what I found:
Letter: School spending has gone far enough Sat, 26 Apr 2008 03:15:00 EDT To the editor: Did you know you can go to the Hamilton town hall and see for yourself the financial report listing all the people and their pay scale? It is presented by the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District. If you examine the report, you must be aware that a portion of the current raises are not reflected in these figures. It covers the 2007 calendar year.
Taylor Armerding: 'Convenience' lets government take a bigger bite Sat, 26 Apr 2008 03:31:00 EDT Convenience is seductive. It is also expensive. It is a major reason why, as the country song says, too many of us have too much month left at the end of the money. This is not just me talking. You can look it up. This comes from a high-level university academic. Check out the study recently completed by MIT economist Amy Finkelstein on the difference between the traditional types who still pay their tolls in cash and the cutting-edge types (like me) who use Fast Lane transponders.
Obama is wounded, but Clinton must prove he can't win Sat, 26 Apr 2008 03:31:00 EDT The best political joke of 2008 was Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's, R-Ky., at the Washington Press Club Foundation's dinner in February — about how the Democratic race featured Hillary Rodham Clinton, a New York senator born in Illinois, and Barack Obama, an Illinois senator "who seems to have been born in a manger."
Dems weighing losses Sat, 26 Apr 2008 03:25:00 EDT Big Freddy was mopping his forehead with an oversized handkerchief as he came through the door. "Warm for April," I said as he stuffed it in a pocket before settling into the seat opposite. "Hot," Freddy said. "The word is hot, and it's too early for this kind of hot."
Prominent businessman mentored regular guy Saturday April 26, 2008 The Worcester Telegram & Gazette has published allegations (Sunday Telegram, April 13) about a prominent businessman, David "Duddie" Massad. I personally want to add my support for Mr. Massad. I've had numerous business dealings with him in the past and recently obtained a significant business loan on real estate property.
Government stole from Fort Knox Saturday April 26, 2008 Americans had better hurry up and purchase silver and gold. They will be competing with the federal government, which buys gold for about 30 cents an ounce, naturally with the approval of our senators and congressmen. Our elected officials who don't look out for our interests throw us a bone and, lo and behold, they are geniuses.

Paper or plastic? Saturday April 26, 2008 Quite frankly, we're of two minds about environmental activists' effort to ban the lightweight, high-density polyethylene bags commonly used in supermarkets in lieu of paper bags. Ambivalence is not an option for Sturbridge residents, however, who will have to vote yea or nay to such a ban in some local stores on Monday.

Air power Sat, 26 Apr 2008 06:00 EST Re-imposing the 5 percent sales tax on aircraft parts is one of the "loopholes" Gov. Patrick proposes to close in the FY09 budget. The House budget writers have so far gone along. The estimated revenue to be raised is $9 million.
