| As a player, Kellogg praised for leadership Tue, 22 Apr 2008 20:59:08 UTC With Derek Kellogg poised to return to UMass, here's one from the vaults, an article about Kellogg's steady leadership skills as a point guard for the Minutemen. Springfield's Kellogg justifies coach's decision AMHERST - It's been said so often that it's become repetitious. And misleading. Derek Kellogg, overachiever. Derek Kellogg, the point guard who has proven the critics wrong. The remarks are based in truth and are meant and accepted as compliments, yet even today, Kellogg is rarely referred to as a top-quality athlete - without the ifs, ands or buts. Maybe that's why University of Massachusetts basketball coach John Calipari's remarks are peppered not with comments about what Kellogg has overcome, but what he has always offered. "I couldn't ask for two better senior captains," he said, discussing Kellogg in the same breath as Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year Lou Roe. "They're great leaders. And both can play." Mark M. Murray / The RepublicanDerek Kellogg. As UMass prepares for tonight's Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament final (9:30, ESPN) against Temple, Kellogg has emerged as someone deserving of unqualified praise - a key part of UMass' recently improved play. He's averaging nearly five assists per game over his last six contests. The 6-foot-2 senior hit four of five 3-pointers and scored 16 points with five assists and two steals against Duquesne in the Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinal. He had nine points with three assists in UMass' 68-57 A-10 semifinal win over St. Joseph's. He's been called the league's best point guard by Duquesne coach John Carroll, who has watched Kellogg since the Cathedral High graduate played Amateur Athletic Union ball. Carroll could have used a Kellogg-type. The Dukes' coach was fired Tuesday. "Lou Roe's a warrior," Carroll said. "And Kellogg's a great leader." "He's always been one of the hardest workers, on and off the floor," Roe said of his classmate. "I'm trying to be more aggressive and make the defenses play me," said Kellogg, who was third among Atlantic 10 3-point shooters this season. "If I can do that, it will make it easier inside for Marcus (Camby) and Lou." Kellogg hit 39.8 percent of his 3's, outshooting guards like George Washington's Kwame Evans (the league's leading scorer) and Duquesne's Tom Pipkins (who was third) in the process. He is the only true point guard on the team, though Edgar Padilla can also play the position. With Mike Williams no longer on the roster, Kellogg and the other guards are expected to shoot more, especially since UMass faces its share of zone defenses. Calipari doesn't expect Kellogg to make all his shots, but the coach's recent operative phrase has been of "making good decisions," and Kellogg's position requires him to make more decisions than anybody else. "He's a general out on the floor," Calipari said. "If our guards make their shots, we'll win big. But my main concern is that they make the right decisions." Now that Kellogg's publicity is almost all positive, he wouldn't be blamed for soaking it all in. But he doesn't, and he says he won't. "I try not to read the papers on the day of the game," he said. "I like you guys (in the media), but a player can get caught up in that. So I try not to read about UMass basketball too much, but to stay relaxed and prepare myself." At Cathedral, Kellogg scored over 1,400 points, but most of the nation doesn't consider him a scoring threat because he's only averaging eight points a game, even as a UMass senior. "People don't realize he scored over 25 points a game (as a senior) in high school," said George Washington coach Mike Jarvis, who is from Massachusetts. Kellogg says he doesn't relish the idea of a rematch with Travis Best if Georgia Tech and UMass are paired up in the NCAA Tournament. "They've got a team that can play against anybody," Kellogg said of the Yellow Jackets, whose recent history has been inconsistent but contains some victories over the nation's elite. "I'll pass on that." Best's Central High teams (which included UMass guard Edgar Padilla in 1990 and 1991) had the upper hand against Kellogg in their high school matchups, many of which were held at the Springfield Civic Center. But Kellogg will play in four NCAA Tournaments, while Georgia Tech settled for an NIT berth last year. And no longer is it considered out of the question that Kellogg will get at least a free-agent NBA tryout, especially if UMass reaches the Final Four. He could also explore European ball, though European teams have traditionally expected their American players to score a lot, while Kellogg does other things. But he hasn't committed to playing basketball next year, and as an Atlantic 10 all-academic pick, he has other options. Right now, he's concentrating on UMass' postseason play. That's enough for both the player and his coach, who has the last laugh over those who criticized him for sticking with Kellogg. "Of our two captains, one (Roe) is a little more hyper than the other," Calipari said. "But they're both leaders. In their own ways." |

| DEATH OF A CYCLIST Tue, 22 Apr 2008 16:11:08 -0400 Criterion's rerelease of Juan Bardem's 1955 film Death of a Cyclist comes not a moment too soon. At the time of its original release, it was a scathing criticism of Francisco Franco's rule over Spain, during which (stop me if you've heard this before) the rich got richer and the poor got screwed. In the movie, a college geometry teacher and his mistress hit a cyclist and continue on their way, leaving him to die. A web of blackmail, guilt and blame ensues, and the claustrophobia and fear the couple experiences are perfectly rendered in Bardem's careful style. what makes the film so relevant today is what's truly at its heart: the death of conscience.
