| UMass Prestige Ranking, New Commish Bernadette McGlade Interview, Random Old School Photo Fri, 25 Jul 2008 16:37:38 UTC • Between Mullins and McGuirk reflects on ESPN's recent list that ranked UMass as the 42nd most prestigious college basketball program in the US. • Peanut Butter Flyers is not pleased to see Dayton checking in at No. 168 on that list. • College Chalk Talk's Jason Rhodes interviews incoming Atlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette McGlade about television deals with CBS, CSTV, and Fox, league exposure, and the possibility of a membership shuffle. It's a great interview, but I was a little disappointed at the vagueness of McGlade's answer to the question about the league's plans for using the internet moving forward. • Also at College Chalk Talk, Ray Floriani goes inside the stats of UMass' NIT run, concluding that the Minutemen did it with defense. • I missed this last week, but so long, Trey Lang. • Random old school photo: Photo by Dave Roback/The RepublicanTyrone Weeks, Inus Norville, and Winston Smith converge for a block on La Salle's Traver Johnson, March 5, 1997. |
UMass Coaches Shows move to Saturday mornings Fri, 25 Jul 2008 15:09:41 UTC Photo by Bob Stern/The RepublicanUMass football coach Don Brown.UMass has announced that they've extended their television deal with CBS 3 Springfield for three more years, and will thankfully move the UMass Coach's Show from the Sunday night graveyard shift to a much more watchable 11:30 AM Saturday morning timeslot. CBS 3 will work in conjunction with UMass to produce a 30-minute magazine coaches shows for both UMass football and UMass men's basketball: "The UMass Football Show with Don Brown" and "The UMass Basketball Show with Derek Kellogg." The shows will air on Saturday mornings at 11:30 a.m., giving UMass fans a preview show before the athletic action that weekend. This season's first show is set to air on Sept. 6, 2008 and episodes will run for 25 weeks into March 2009. The show will transition from football to basketball once the football season is concluded. The shows will be hosted by new play-by-play man Josh Maurer, with CBS 3's Scott Harris producing feature segments. I think the change in timeslot is great news. The opportunity to get ahead of the weekend's games should raise the visibility of weekend games -- certainly much more than the Sunday slot could ever hope to do. I'm also excited to see the kind of energy Derek Kellogg and Josh Maurer bring to the show as a unit. Maurer is 27 years old, and Kellogg is 35 (four years younger than Travis Ford, for what it's worth). Their show is undoubtedly going to have a younger feel to it than previous incarnations. Whether that amounts to a hill of beans, we'll just have to tune in to see. |

| Comment on Woman facing home auction kills herself by no name Fri, 25 Jul 2008 14:10:46 +0000 It is a shame that someone felt so desperate and resorted to suicide. My guess is that there were other issues along with the foreclosure that led to this. For the mortgage company it may be very difficult to try to sell a house where a suicide took place. Many people get spooked about any unnatural deaths and in the end it could very well diminish the property value. |

| Pay no attention to that bear behind the shrubbery Mon, 28 Jul 2008 00:34:55 UTC So, it's a great shot of the rhododendrons, pay no attention to that bear behind the shrubbery.
A picture that is almost in focus and the rest of the story after the jump... A little excitement round the house tonite. My son had just come home and was getting out of his car with a dozen Dunkin' Donuts. We saw him pull in and of course the Stupid Little Angry Dog started with her running and jumping at the front door. Never being one to try to calm the stupid beast, my husband got her further worked up by saying "It's Jeff.. JEFF is home..." and then opening the front door to let the dog do her job and run full bore at the kid as he was coming across the drive. So he flung open the door and the dog took off down the stairs... stopped dead in her tracks at the bottom... took one look.. turned and promptly ran right back up the stairs... The next few minutes consisted of my husband yelling "camera... camera... camera..." Me wondering what the heck he wanted the camera for... no.. apparently you can't yell "bear" when your looking at one standing not 20 feet from you... Me finally getting the camera and being horrified at what I was looking at and trying to calm my hand shaking as I tried to control the dog and work the shutter... the stupid dog barking her head off... the kid slowly putting the donuts back in the car and getting in as well... and the bear... the bear just calmly ate the little bit of suet that was left in the feeder and then slowly walking off into the woods.

| Comment on Fisher cats are back by Nancy Sun, 27 Jul 2008 22:42:07 +0000 Fisher cats were part of a discussion on WTIC radio on July 25th, and once again a home discussion today. This search for new info led me here. I have known of them in the CT towns Coventry and East Glastonbury, my area, in locations near State forest. I have so far prevented kept both coyote and fox from capturing the cat(s; the fiesty schipperke has also ignored the invisible fence and given chase. Like Bea and other commentors, my animals spend considerable time outside. The cats do take liberties with the curfew. We hope they're safe. I a |

| Comment on Woman facing home auction kills herself by Dick Callahan (RF Callahan) Sat, 26 Jul 2008 20:07:02 +0000 Suicite is an act of depression. financial organizations deal with profit and losses in their individual businesses. Little consideration when signing on that dotted line when homes and even automobiles are contracted to the new owners. If they seem to be able to make the payments without problems then go ahead and sing them up. Little regard is given, especially this is so in Auto dealerships, that the purchaser down the line will not be able to pay. Forclosure resulting in what has happened to that unfortunate woman have occurred before. |
| Comment on Who says cats can’t swim? by Dick Callahan (RF Callahan) Sat, 26 Jul 2008 18:01:03 +0000 I viewed that most discusting video. The cats owner has no idea what he had just done. Cats generally hate water, especially swimming in same. The cat had no choice and was forced to swim, a cruelty of the most undesirable kind. It was not a happy animal and under normal circumstances that cat would have turned around and scratched its owners eyes out. I would not have felt sorry for the man had he done so. |

| Comment on Well, somebody’s got to be lying by Dino Sat, 26 Jul 2008 15:52:27 +0000 Who do you think was lying? The Trooper (hack) called in to carry out Pudolsky's orders to ambush or the man who had been gone for a week serving his country? Who do you think was lying when testimony proved, Risner always kept the cash in his briefcase in his office. If he were trying to steal it, it certainly would have been left at the Sheriff's Dept. Finnerty and Franey were shocked? Probably Jerry's talking points memo to them. They knew better than to cross Darth Jerry. Less than 20 minutes and the Jury had it figured out. What a slap in the face to McDonald and Cruz. Inefficiency all the way around. Evil never wins out. |
| Comment on No more MSNBC for Comcast proletariat by Mike Sat, 26 Jul 2008 10:34:49 +0000 Of course this is totally political. The right wing has blown open the door to extreme media consolidation over the past 8 years and Comcast is determined to do everything within its power to ensure that they hold presidential power. Muting MSNBC is just one way of doing that. |
