Salisbury Beach Festival Offers More Than Fun and Sun Sun, 29 Jun 2008 23:48:00 EDT SALISBURY — It's a shame Mother Nature was in a sour mood this weekend, because everyone involved with the 2008 Salisbury Sand and Sea Festival certainly were not. The music was rising, the food salivating, the rides spinning, and the ageless soul of the crowd was alive with families and friends. And despite over cast skies, a nagging mist, and some serious chop in the water, the events and plans organized by the Salisbury Beach Partnership executive director Kathy Aiello, came to fruition regardless of how the elements were behaving. |

Letter: Coaches did great job with U-12 soccer team Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:39:00 EDT To the editor: On behalf of the parents of the Amesbury U-12 boys travel soccer, we would like to thank Gordon Stockwood and Rob Flanagan for doing an awsome job coaching these boys all season long. The Amesbury U-12 boys made it to the Pingree Playoffs to go all the way to win the championship in this league. They went to the playoff and played the best as a team; they learned how to work as a team. They couldn't have done it without the patience and the encouragement that the coaches had given these boys. They played two playoff games and lost Saturday against Methuen, but these boys gave it their all. Thanks, Gordon and Rob, let's try again next spring.
Letter: Cushing Park should be preserved Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:38:00 EDT To the editor: The other evening, the Newburyport City Council Planning and Development Committee voted against changing the designation of Cushing Park from park/parking lot to one that could be used as a site for a senior center. This was the right decision for the committee to make, after holding numerous meetings and hearing from many neighborhood residents who are opposed to any change in use.
Letter: Develop Cushing Park as place to serve all the community Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:37:00 EDT To the editor: In response to both letters to the editor published in The Daily News on Friday, June 27, concerning building a senior center at Cushing Park: While I have never responded to a letter or editorial in my life, I feel strongly about developing Cushing Park as a campus that would serve seniors, youth and neighbors. I am just in from a walk that took me around Cushing Park. It is a Saturday morning and while it is cool and misty, there are tag sales in progress, people running and walking their dogs, and people out doing yard work. I did not see a single person at Cushing Park. What I did see was seven cars, (two with New Hampshire plates, and one from Maine); one unhitched trailer, and oh, a trashed television set thrown near a trash barrel on the side of the road. This is not the first time I have witnessed a scene like this, and in fact, it is more the rule than the exception.
Letter: Time to vote yes for senior center at Cushing Park Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:36:00 EDT To the editor: My connection to the Newburyport Council on Aging (COA) has been as a SHINE counselor who provides advice to senior citizens on health insurance options, enrollment applications, claims and appeals. Conferences with clients must be held in a setting which respects privacy and confidentiality and which provides telephone and high-speed Internet access.
Senior center: The time is now Mon, 30 Jun 2008 03:35:00 EDT To the editor: For decades now this community has debated over where a senior center should be located. The current proposed site of Cushing Park was urged upon the Senior Center Site Selection Committee by the former administration of Mayor Clancy and then planning director Nick Cracknell and now has been endorsed and put forward by our current mayor, John Moak. Both administrations have understood the necessity of a senior center.
