In the Spirit: Follow God's commands and go green Sat, 03 May 2008 03:21:00 EDT I've been serving in Rowley now for 10 years, but lately no one recognizes me anymore ... at least not when I'm driving! You see, I've gone a little "greener" when it comes to automotive transportation. No, I haven't purchased a hybrid (they are beyond my ministerial salary!). However, I did trade in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler (15 mpg) for a 2006 Ford Focus (30 mpg). With gasoline nearing $4 a gallon, driving my beloved Jeep became a budget buster. I've owned two black Jeeps over the past 13 years and have been a Jeep fan since I was a child. Now I'm driving a blue Focus (the color is blue, but it's a much "greener" car!) and it is taking some getting used to for me and for my friends in Rowley.
Words on Birds: Birds display many signs of spring Sat, 03 May 2008 03:21:00 EDT It must be spring. I heard a rapid, metallic banging that sounded like someone hammering on the building. It brought back a memory of the year I first opened the store. That first year, Ed was bagging seed in the back room when he came out and asked if I was having construction done on the building. I had hired no contractors, so we listened again, hearing that same metallic banging that I heard today. We went outside and there was a northern flicker banging away at the metal chimney on the building.

Taylor Armerding: People come together to mend a torn life Sat, 03 May 2008 03:21:00 EDT I'm meeting Margaret Pena for the first time, and I can't stop thinking about threads. Everybody's life is a weave of them — family, friends, experiences, successes and failures — that eventually form a virtual garment. For a fortunate few, it's a beautiful and unspoiled thing. For most of us, there is some damage here and there, but it holds together. In some, it is frayed, decayed or torn to pieces. But sometimes, even when the fabric gets torn in a way that seems irreparable, new threads knit it back together into something even better.

Cutting-edge technology makes for Smart students in Salisbury Fri, 02 May 2008 15:50:00 EDT SALISBURY — Earlier this week, Kim Peterson's fourth-graders sat engrossed during their lesson on the six simple machines in technology teacher Brendan Stokes' classroom. Discussing the attributes of a pair of scissors — a lever and fulcrum, in simple machine language — one might expect that Stokes faced a challenge getting kids excited about their lesson. But as the picture of a pair of scissors appeared on a billboard-sized computer screen facing the students, they sat attentively, hands flew with a "pick me please" intensity, and students scurried up to the board to offer their input.
Our view: Save outrage for those who most deserve it Fri, 02 May 2008 15:20:00 EDT Outrage over the failure by the state Department of Social Services to protect children in a number of recent, high-profile cases is both understandable and justifiable. Clearly improvements are imperative, especially in light of a recent report issued by the Children's Advocacy Institute and the watchdog group First Star, which gave the state a D-minus for its efforts to protect children from abuse. Only 10 states fared worse than ours.
